My Leadership 2.0 Action Plan

November 6th, 2020

I have been tasked with reading Leadership 2.0 by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves. It’s similar to Emotional Intelligence 2.0 by the same authors in that it has a survey and strategies for how to improve. I wanted to organize what the survey results were so that I could refer back to them at a later date. The book offers two sets of leadership skills: Core and Adaptive. Core Leadership is broken down into Strategy, Action, and Results. Strategy requires Vision, Acumen, Planning, and Courage to Lead. Action requires Decision Making, Communication, and Mobilizing Others. Results require Risk-Taking, Results Focus, and Agility. Adaptive Leadership is broken down into Emotional Intelligence, Organizational Justice, Character, and Development. Emotional Intelligence requires Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, and Relationship Management. Organizational Justice requires Decision Fairness, Information Sharing, and Outcome Concern. Character requires Integrity, Credibility, and Values Differences. Development requires Lifelong Learning and Developing Others. Based on the survey that I took, my five highest leadership skills are:

  • Communication – 4.67/6
  • Planning – 4.67/6
  • Agility – 4.50/6
  • Developing Others – 4.33/6
  • Integrity – 4.33/6

My five highest leadership behaviors (Which I listed as doing almost always – 5/6) are:

  • Embracing changes early on – Agility
  • Changing when the situation requires it – Agility
  • Providing others with access to the information they need to perform – Communication
  • Giving others the freedom to express themselves – Communication
  • Establishing the sequence of steps necessary to achieve goals – Planning

My five lowest leadership skills (also known as my leadership growth areas along with my lowest leadership behaviors) are as follows:

  • Social Awareness – 3/6
  • Vision – 3/6
  • Acumen – 3/6
  • Credibility – 3.33/6
  • Self-Awareness – 3.33/6

My five lowest leadership behaviors (which I listed as doing sometimes 3/6) are:

  • Showing others I can be counted on – Credibility
  • Gaining the trust of others – Credibility
  • Recognizing how my behaviors impacts others – Self-Awareness
  • Recognizing how my emotional state impacts others – Self-Awareness
  • Using sensitivity to another person’s feelings to manage interactions successfully – Social Awareness

My plan for action is as follows:

  • Be reliable and Consistent – Integrity strategy #4
  • Earn It – Integrity strategy #1
  • Get Feedback – Self-Awareness strategy #7
  • Uncover My Primal Leadership – Self-Awareness Strategy #5
  • Listen and Observe – Social Awareness strategy #1

At present I’m not sure how thoroughly I’m going to follow all of this. I’m sure that it will be useful whenever I’m more interested in improving these skills (such as when I’m in a defined leadership position). The survey mentioned a lot about engaging with employees which I’m not currently in a position to improve upon. I’ll finish the book though and report anything that I find useful. More than likely, it will go on my bookshelf with my other business development books that I plan to read when the time comes for me to deploy rapid personal development. At present though, I am still diving into my deeply held personal beliefs that I wish to deconstruct and reconstruct to ensure that I am becoming the type of person I want to be.
